Circus
Circus is the self-titled debut studio album by the Swiss quartet Circus, formed in Basel in 1972. The album was recorded in April 1976 at Studio Harald Blobel in Bottmingen and released later that year by the Zytglogge label. This release is cataloged under ZYT 204 / ZYT 208 and is available in vinyl LP format.
The lineup of Circus features Roland Frei on lead vocals, acoustic guitars, and tenor saxophone. Marco Cerletti contributes electric bass, bass pedals, and acoustic guitar. Andreas Grieder plays concert flute, alto saxophone, tambourine, and provides backing vocals. Fritz Hauser rounds out the group with drums, vibraphone, and percussion. Hauser would later gain recognition as an avant-garde percussionist and composer.
Circus distinguishes itself with its unique acoustic-symphonic instrumentation. The band does not use electric lead guitar or traditional keyboards. Instead, they craft intricate progressive rock compositions through the use of 12-string guitars, flutes, saxophones, vibraphones, and bass pedals. The compositions often explore complex time signatures. Their sound draws comparisons to other progressive bands like King Crimson and Jethro Tull.
The album consists of five tracks that span two sides of the vinyl. The opening track, "Stormsplinter," sets the tone for the album. The centerpiece of the album is "Room For Sale," which runs for 15:07. Another significant track is the 10:49 epic "Nowadays," which showcases the band's ability to weave intricate melodies and harmonies.
Circus was recorded in a professional studio setting, ensuring high production quality. The mastering was completed at Tonstudio Rico Sonderegger, further enhancing the sound of the album. The combination of skilled musicianship and careful production contributes to the album's distinct character.
Circus was released in 1976 on the Swiss Zytglogge label. The album's catalog number is ZYT 204 / ZYT 208. The unique sound and structure of this record make it a noteworthy entry in the realm of Swiss progressive rock.
