Introduction to Fantasia

Fantasia is a Finnish rock band formed in the early 1970s, evolving from the St. Marcus Bluesband. The group coalesced around key members Hannu Lindblom and Karl-Erik Rönngård, who both remained after the original lineup disbanded. The newly formed band welcomed Roul Helantie and Harri Piha into the fold. Their self-titled debut album, released in October 1975, is their only record and was issued by the Hi-Hat label.

Album Composition and Sound

The album features nine tracks that blend progressive rock with jazz-rock elements. The instrumentation includes guitar, electric piano, Moog synthesizer, Hammond organ, bass, and drums. Lindblom takes on vocals and guitar duties, while Helantie contributes with keyboards and synthesizers. The rhythm section is anchored by Piha on bass and Rönngård on drums. The sound has been compared to the works of Camel and Wigwam, particularly reflecting the styles of their respective eras.

Track Highlights

Prominent tracks such as "Pilvien Takaa" and "Huutokauppa" illustrate the band’s ability to meld intricate instrumental passages with vocal melodies. The track “Tulen Pisara” showcases the dynamic interplay between guitar and synthesizers, creating a rich soundscape. The album runs for approximately 34 minutes, with a locked groove or short closing element appearing as the ninth track on certain pressings.

Historical Context

The release of Fantasia's album did not occur on CD until 2010, which marked a resurgence in interest for the band. Post-release, guitarist Hannu Lindblom reassembled a new lineup to continue performing under the Fantasia name. This self-titled album encapsulates a moment in the Finnish rock scene of the 1970s, reflecting the experimentation that characterized that period.

Personnel and Production

The album credits consist of four members: Hannu Lindblom on guitar and vocals, Roul Helantie on electric piano, Moog synthesizer, and Hammond organ, Harri Piha on bass, and Karl-Erik Rönngård on drums. The album was released under the catalogue number HILP 107.
