Dedicated To Markos III
"Dedicated To Markos III," originally titled "Black Flower," is the third studio album by the British baroque-psychedelic group Nirvana. Released in the UK by Pye International in 1970, and initially in the US by Metromedia in 1969, the album showcases a blend of rock, pop rock, and psychedelic rock. It features orchestral arrangements that are both rich and diverse, contributing to its unique sound.
The album was produced by Mike Hurst, known for his work with The Springfields and Cat Stevens. It features orchestral arrangements from a talented trio: Tony Visconti, who was arranging David Bowie's "Space Oddity" during the same period, Mike Vickers of Manfred Mann, and jazz musician Johnny Scott. These arrangements enhance the album's intricate sound, intertwining elements of chamber pop, acid-folk, and progressive rock.
"Dedicated To Markos III" consists of ten tracks that explore various themes and musical styles. The album includes the six-minute "Love Suite," which has been sampled by DJ Shadow for his track "Stem/Long Stem" on the influential 1996 album "Endtroducing....." Other notable tracks include "The World Is Cold Without You," "I Talk To My Room," and "Christopher Lucifer," the latter being a tribute and critique directed at Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. The song "Trés, Trés Bien" incorporates Latin rhythms, showcasing the band's eclectic influences.
The album was recorded at Morgan Studios and Olympic Studios in London over a period from May to June 1969. This period saw the band experiment with different soundscapes, all while drawing on their classical and psychedelic roots. The resulting album presents a cohesive yet varied listening experience that reflects the creativity of the era.
The lineup features Patrick Campbell-Lyons on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, alongside Alex Spyropoulos on keyboards, piano, and flute. Both members played significant roles as composers and arrangers. Their combined efforts, along with the orchestral contributions, create a richly textured sound throughout the album.
"Dedicated To Markos III" is cataloged under Pye International as NSPL 28132.
