Introduction to Aquelarre

Aquelarre is an Argentine rock band that emerged in the early 1970s, featuring a blend of psychedelic and progressive rock influences. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1972 under the Trova label, marks a significant milestone in their musical journey. The band consists of former Almendra members Emilio del Guercio and Rodolfo Garcia, alongside guitarist Hector Starc and keyboardist Hugo Gonzalez Neira. This album was recorded at Estudios ION in Buenos Aires during March and April of the same year.

Musical Composition

The album comprises six tracks, with a total running time of just under forty minutes. The sound oscillates between heavier electric segments, characterized by Starc's distorted Gibson Les Paul, and softer, folk-inspired passages that highlight acoustic instruments. Notably, “Aventura En El Arbol” is the album’s longest track, clocking in at 8:47. This piece exemplifies the band's ability to shift between riff-driven sections and intricate instrumental solos, demonstrating their musicianship and creativity.

Instrumentation and Production

Aquelarre’s instrumentation is rich and varied. Emilio Del Guercio plays both bass and acoustic guitar while contributing vocals and illustrations for the album. Hugo Gonzalez Neira adds depth with the clavinet and Hammond organ, creating atmospheric layers. Hector Starc complements the sound with electric and acoustic guitars, including the ukulele. Drummer Rodolfo Garcia not only anchors the rhythm but also provides vocal harmonies. The album was engineered by Carlos Piriz and mastered by Luis Quinteros, with production coordinated by Alfredo Radoszynski and Angel Del Guercio.
