Ars Longa Vita Brevis
Ars Longa Vita Brevis is the second studio album by the English band The Nice. Released on November 1, 1968, by Immediate Records, the album showcases the band's blend of rock and orchestral elements. The title, a Latin phrase meaning "art is long, life is short," reflects a philosophical underpinning that resonates throughout the album's compositions.
The Nice recorded the album in August and October of 1968 at Pye Studios in London. The original lineup consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson, bassist and vocalist Lee Jackson, drummer Brian Davison, and guitarist David O'List. However, O'List was dismissed from the band on October 1, 1968, during the recording process. He had already contributed guitar parts to several tracks, including "Daddy Where Did I Come From?" and "Little Arabella." Following his departure, The Nice finished the album as a keyboard-led trio.
Ars Longa Vita Brevis features a diverse range of musical styles. Side one includes an arrangement of "Intermezzo From The Karelia Suite" by Jean Sibelius, showcasing the band's ability to weave classical influences into their rock sound. Side two is dedicated entirely to the album's title piece, a nearly nineteen-minute suite for rock band and orchestra. This ambitious work is divided into a prelude, four distinct movements, and a coda. The orchestral arrangements were crafted by Robert Stewart, adding depth to the band's sound.
Among the standout tracks is "Daddy Where Did I Come From?" which features a blend of playful lyrics and intricate arrangements. "Little Arabella" showcases The Nice's unique approach to songwriting, combining rock elements with classical instrumentation. The title suite, "Ars Longa Vita Brevis," serves as a culmination of the band's creative vision, demonstrating their technical prowess and artistic ambition.
The album was produced by The Nice and engineered by Don Brewer. Gered Mankowitz provided the photography for the album cover.
