Autumn Grass
"Autumn Grass," released in late 1971, marks the second studio album by British band Continuum. This album, distributed by RCA Victor under catalog numbers SF 8225, SF 8196, and LSP-4607, showcases the band’s evolution from an acoustic sound to a more electric chamber rock and avant-garde progressive rock style. Recorded at Wessex Sound Studios in London, the album was produced by Tim Satchell, with sound engineering by Barry Ainsworth and Ray Hendrickson.
The album features a diverse range of musical influences. Side A begins with an adaptation of William Byrd's renaissance theme in "Byrd Pavan," which lasts 9:17 minutes. This is followed by "Vivaldi Synthesis Two," where the early synthesizer pioneer Ken Freeman plays his custom Freeman Synthesiser. The side concludes with "Overdraft," an 11:10-minute fusion piece that blends elements of jazz and rock.
Side B is entirely dedicated to the avant-garde chamber-prog suite titled "Autumn Grass." This composition, lasting 26:15 minutes, was specifically created for the band by British composer Patric Standford. The orchestration includes contributions from The Olympus Strings, as well as percussion elements like gong and dual guitars.
Continuum's lineup includes Yoel Schwarcz on flute, harmonica, recorder, alto saxophone, and classical guitar, alongside Tim Rice on Hammond organ and piano. Peter Billam plays both bass and electric guitar, while Harvey Troupe is on drums. The album also features guest musicians, such as Ken Freeman, who enhances the sound with his synthesizer, and Richard Hartley, who acts as musical director on Side B. Other contributors include John Warren on classical guitar, Mike Hart on double bass, and Dick Wildman on drums and percussion.
This album was captured at Wessex Sound Studios, a notable location for many artists during that era. The combination of classical instrumentation and progressive rock elements provides a unique listening experience. The blend of genres reflects the band's innovative approach to music in the early 1970s.
