Introduction to Badger

Badger, a British progressive rock supergroup, released their live debut album, One Live Badger, in April 1973. The album came out under Atlantic Records, catalog number K 40473. The band was formed by Tony Kaye, who is best known as the founding keyboardist for Yes. He teamed up with bassist David Foster, guitarist Brian Parrish, and drummer Roy Dyke to create a distinctive sound.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, London, on December 15 and 16, 1972. This performance took place while Badger was supporting Yes on their Close to the Edge tour. Unique for its time, One Live Badger features entirely new, unreleased original material. The recording was co-produced by Jon Anderson, the lead singer of Yes, alongside Geoffrey Haslam and the band itself. The sound was engineered by Geoffrey Haslam and Martin Rushent, known for their work at Advision Studios.

The album cover is an elaborate die-cut pop-up gatefold design created by Roger Dean, famed for his work with Yes. The artwork features a three-dimensional pop-up of badgers emerging from a burrow, surrounded by glowing mushrooms. Musical Style and Composition

One Live Badger blends progressive blues-rock with hard rock elements. The album features Tony Kaye's signature sound, which includes powerful Hammond B3 organ solos and rich Mellotron textures. The band’s lineup brings together diverse influences, as Kaye was also known for his work with Flash. David Foster, having co-written classic tracks for Yes, adds depth to the bass lines and backing vocals.
