Deep End
Released in 1975 by Gull Records, "Deep End" is the third and final studio album from the British jazz-fusion band Isotope. Recorded at Trident Studios in London, this album showcases a blend of jazz and rock elements characteristic of the band’s style. The album was produced by Robin Lumley, known for his work with the influential group Brand X.
The lineup for "Deep End" features several talented musicians. Gary Boyle leads the group with electric and acoustic guitars and serves as the composer and bandleader. He is joined by Zoe Kronberger and Frank Roberts, who provide a dual-keyboard arrangement with Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano, and synthesizers. Dan K. Brown plays electric bass, a role he later took to prominence with the 1980s band The Fixx. Drummer Nigel Morris completes the core lineup, while Morris Pert contributes percussion and additional musicians Hugh Hopper and Laurence Scott make guest appearances on the track "Fonebone."
"Deep End" offers a unique musical experience that merges Isotope's technical jazz-rock fusion with influences from Brand X. The album is characterized by its funky grooves and Latin-jazz warmth. It features eight tracks, including “Mr. M's Picture,” “Crunch Cake,” and the expansive title track “Deep End,” which runs for 8:22 minutes. The combination of intricate guitar work, layered keyboards, and rhythmic complexity creates a distinctive sound that appeals to both jazz and rock enthusiasts.
Recorded in late 1975, the sessions took place at Trident Studios, a location known for its high-quality sound production. The engineering team included Jerry Smith, Geoff Leach, Neil Ross, and Steve Tayler, contributing to the album's polished sound. The involvement of Robin Lumley as producer adds a level of expertise, given his background with progressive rock and fusion bands.
Isotope's "Deep End" was cataloged as GULP 1017 by Gull Records.
