Brand X's "Livestock," released in November 1977 under the Charisma label (CLASS 5), is a live album that captures the essence of the British jazz-fusion scene. The album showcases performances recorded at three prestigious venues in London: Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, the Marquee Club, and Hammersmith Odeon. These recordings took place in September 1976 and August 1977, using mobile recording units from Island and Manor.

The band features a talented lineup that includes Phil Collins on drums for select tracks, alongside Kenwood Dennard, who brings his unique drumming style to other pieces. Percy Jones plays fretless bass guitar and marimba, adding rich textures to the music. Electric guitarist John Goodsall contributes rapid-fire solos, while Robin Lumley handles the Fender Rhodes and synthesizers. Morris Pert enhances the sound with his diverse percussion, both tuned and untuned.

“Livestock” consists of five extended compositions. The album opens with "Nightmare Patrol," a fierce and energetic piece that sets the tone. Following this is the funky "-Ish," which features liquid bass lines and intricate rhythms. "Euthanasia Waltz" is presented in a turbocharged live rendition, showcasing the band's improvisational skills. The atmospheric "Isis Mourning" is divided into two parts, creating a dynamic listening experience. The album culminates with "Malaga Virgen," an explosive tour de force that highlights the band's technical prowess.

Brand X produced the album themselves, and it was engineered by Jerry Smith, Dennis MacKay, Neil Ross, and Colin Green. The cover artwork, designed by the renowned Hipgnosis, features live animals grazing in a studio environment, adding a unique visual element to the record.
