In late 1970, British ensemble Swegas released their debut album, Child Of Light, on the independent Trend label. This eight-piece band formed in London in 1969. Their name derives from an Old English term meaning "sounds" or "music." Swegas blends elements of progressive rock with brass and jazz influences, creating a unique sound in the rock genre.

Recording Details

Child Of Light was recorded at Tangerine Studios located in Dalston, London. The production was led by John Worsley, with engineering by Tony Rockliffe and mixing by John "Peanut" Smythe. The album features a rich tapestry of musical instrumentation, highlighted by complex horn arrangements and the use of the Hammond organ. Heavy fuzz guitar complements the brass, creating a dense soundscape throughout the album.

Musical Composition

The album consists of five long tracks, each showcasing Swegas's ability to weave intricate compositions. One of the standout pieces is an extended arrangement of Rare Bird's "Beautiful Scarlet," which runs for 7 minutes and 10 seconds. Other tracks include "Planetarium," "Magic Pipe," "Photographs," and the title track "Child Of Light." The band employs dynamic time signatures and features a variety of instruments, including trombone, trumpet, saxophones, and drums. This mix contributes to the album's overall complexity and depth.

The lineup of Swegas includes Stewart Wilkinson on guitar and vocals, Keith Strachan on organ, piano, and vocals, and Roy Truman on bass. Maurice McElroy plays drums, while the brass section features Nick Ronai on trombone, Chris Dawe on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Legg on alto and baritone sax, and Ron Shillingford on tenor and soprano sax. This diverse instrumentation is central to the band's sound.
