In 1971, British progressive brass-rock group Swegas released their second and final studio album, Beyond The Ox. This album came out under BASF Records and was recorded at Command Studios in Piccadilly, London. The band, comprising eight members, blended rock, jazz, and progressive elements to create a unique sound.

Musical Composition

Beyond The Ox features a variety of musical styles, reflecting the era's progressive tendencies. The first side opens with "Into The Ox", followed by two tracks, "Said But Never Heard" and the four-part ecological suite titled "Polution". This suite consists of "Dawning", "Morning", "Evensong", and "Tomorrow", each segment exploring different themes related to the environment.

The second side of the album includes the instrumental "1776 Fantasia", which spans six minutes. This track features intricate brass arrangements and improvisational elements. Following this is "Cold Unfriendly Way", a bluesy piece, along with "Gravedigger" and the title track "Beyond The Ox". The album closes with a brief outro named "Oxtail".

The lineup of Swegas consists of Stewart Wilkinson on guitar and vocals, Keith Strachan on organ, piano, and vocals, and Roy Truman on bass. Maurice McElroy plays drums, while the brass section includes Nick Ronai on trombone, Chris Dawe on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Legg on alto and baritone sax, and Ron Shillingford on tenor and soprano sax. This diverse instrumentation contributes to the album's rich soundscape.
