Lift
The album "Lift" is the self-titled debut studio offering from the German art-rock ensemble Lift. Released in 1977, this album came out under the AMIGA label, which was state-owned in East Germany. The band's formation dates back to 1973 in Dresden, where they began crafting a distinctive sound that combines elements of rock, art rock, and progressive rock.
Lift's music is characterized by a sophisticated blend of dual keyboards, including the Hammond organ, piano, Minimoog, and Clavinet. The ensemble also employs lyrical flute and saxophone, creating rich melodic textures. The rhythmic foundation is robust, driven by precise drumming and bass work. The German-language lyrics are poetic, written by notable East German poets such as Kurt Demmler and Ingeburg Branoner, alongside contributions from lead vocalist Henry Pacholski.
The album features nine tracks that explore various themes and moods. "Wasser Und Wein" opens with a reflective tone, while "...Fällt Der Erste Reif" captures a sense of change. One of the standout pieces, "Abendstunde, Stille Stunde," serves as an anthemic ballad that encapsulates the band's emotive vocal style. Each track showcases the band's ability to blend intricate musical arrangements with poignant lyrics.
The lineup of Lift includes Henry Pacholski on lead vocals, Werther Lohse on drums and vocals, and Michael Heubach playing piano and synthesizers. Wolfgang Scheffler contributes electric piano and synthesizers, while Gerhard Zachar plays bass guitar and provides vocals. Till Patzer rounds out the group on alto and tenor saxophone, as well as flute.
The album "Lift" consists of a total of nine tracks spread across two sides of vinyl. It was released in 1977 and is cataloged under the AMIGA label with the number 8 55 550. The album is a representative work of East German rock music during this era, highlighting the creative spirit of its time.
