Artist and Formation

Rontheo is a Canadian-German acoustic folk-rock and acid-folk duo formed in Germany in 1974. The duo consists of singer-songwriter and guitarist Ronnie Di Tomaso, who was born in Canada, and German multi-instrumentalist Theo Busch. Their self-titled album, released in 1976, marks their only studio release.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded at Breitkopf Studio located in Wiesbaden / Taunusstein. Peter Muehlbauer took on the roles of producer and arranger for the project. The recording features a blend of acoustic instruments, with Di Tomaso playing both 6-string and 12-string guitars, while Busch contributes violin, percussion, organ, and backing vocals. Yedz, a guest electric guitarist, adds further texture to the sound.

Musical Style and Influences

Rontheo's music is characterized by lyrical and pastoral acoustic folk-rock elements. The album includes delicate fingerpicking and expressive classical and folk violin leads. These elements combine to create melancholic harmonies with gentle psychedelic nuances. The sound draws comparisons to artists such as early Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, and Fairport Convention, reflecting a blend of folk and rock influences.

Track Highlights

The album comprises nine tracks that explore various themes and styles within the folk-rock genre. Noteworthy songs include “Lady From Heaven,” which showcases the duo's harmonic capabilities, and “By The Side Of A Clear Crystal Fountain,” where intricate guitar work complements the violin melodies. The track “Tomorrow Will Know” closes the album on a reflective note, encapsulating the duo’s lyrical depth and musical synergy.

Release Information

Rontheo was released on the German label Breitkopf Song, catalog number BSO 70007 / Breitkopf & Härtel. The album was made available in vinyl LP format, which was a common medium for music releases in the mid-1970s. This self-titled album stands as a representation of a unique collaboration between two musicians from different backgrounds.
