Introduction to Archaia

Archaia, a French rock trio, emerged from Paris in the late 1970s. The band consisted of Philippe Bersan on vocals and keyboards, Pierrick Le Bras on guitar and keyboards, and Michel Munier on bass. They were active from 1977 to 1979, during which they recorded their sole self-titled album. This album was self-released in 1977 under the Choravox imprint.

Musical Style and Composition

The music of Archaia blends elements of psychedelic symphonic rock with progressive electronic textures. What sets them apart is their unique approach to percussion. Rather than using a traditional rock drum kit, the band relied on a variety of unconventional instruments such as chimes, bells, and other metal and tribal-sounding percussion. This choice creates an atmospheric backdrop for the intricate guitar work and rich synthesizer arrangements. Tracks like "Soleil Noir" and "L'arche Des Mutations" exemplify their experimental sound, merging complex rhythms with melodic lines.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded and mixed in August 1977 at their own Archaia studio. Dominique Calmel served as the producer for this project. The album was released in a fully laminated single sleeve, which was typical for the era but adds a distinct visual aesthetic to the release. Michel Munier also contributed to the artwork for the album, showcasing his artistic skills alongside his musical contributions.

Track Highlights

Among the tracks, "Le Festin Du Lion Vert" and "Vol Du Phenix" stand out for their intricate arrangements and captivating melodic lines. The combination of synthesizers and guitars creates a rich sonic tapestry that reflects the band's diverse influences. Each track varies in length and complexity, demonstrating their ability to craft engaging music without the reliance on standard rock formats.

Closure of the Band

Despite the intriguing sound and individualistic approach, Archaia disbanded in 1979 after a brief but impactful period of activity. Their sole album provides a glimpse into a unique moment in the progressive rock scene of France during the late 1970s. The album was recorded at Archaia studio in August 1977.
