Bernice
Bernice is the fourth studio album by the American band Kaleidoscope, released in 1970 under Epic Records. The album was recorded in Los Angeles during 1969 and 1970 and features a blend of psychedelic folk-rock, blues-rock, and country-rock. Kaleidoscope's lineup during this period saw the introduction of lead vocalist Jeff Kaplan, alongside established members such as David Lindley on lead guitar and vocals, and Solomon Feldthouse, who played guitars and oud.
The album was produced by Jackie Mills and the band itself, with engineering contributions from Bob Breault and Mark Freeman. This production team crafted a sound that shifted towards a punchy, groove-oriented style, reflective of the musical trends of the time. The album consists of ten tracks, including the title track "Bernice" and the expansive closing jam known as "New Blue Ooze," which stretches over nine minutes. Other notable tracks include "Chocolate Whale" and "Sneakin' Thru The Ghetto."
Bernice marks a period of transition for Kaleidoscope, as the band explored various musical styles. The tracks exhibit a mix of blues-rock and country-rock influences, layered with psychedelic pop elements. The addition of Robert "Big Boy" Armstrong on musical saw adds a unique texture to the overall sound. Each song showcases the band's eclectic approach, highlighting both vocal harmonies and instrumental diversity.
The album reflects a time of lineup changes for Kaleidoscope. Jeff Kaplan's soulful voice brings a new dynamic to the group, while other core members maintain a balance of musical styles. The presence of various instruments, like the oud and harmonica, enriches the sonic landscape of the album.
Bernice was released in 1970 with the catalog numbers BN 26565 and BN 26508. The album is available in vinyl format, typical for releases of that era. Its production and artistic direction align with the experimental spirit that defined the progressive rock movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
