Introduction to Collegium Musicum

Collegium Musicum, a Slovak art rock ensemble, released their debut self-titled album in 1971 under the Supraphon label. This album reflects the unique musical landscape of Czechoslovakia during the early 1970s. The group was formed around Marián Varga, a distinguished organist and composer, and included Fedor Frešo on bass guitar and lead vocals, Rastislav Vacho on guitar, and Dušan Hájek on drums.

Recording Details

The album was recorded between October 26 and October 28, 1970, at Supraphon Studio located in Dejvice, Prague. The production involved several skilled professionals, including conductor Vladimír Popelka, who also served as the recording supervisor. The sound engineering team featured František Řebíček and Jan Chalupský, while Hynek Žalčík took on the role of producer. The cover design was crafted by Jiří Rathouský, with liner notes provided by Alexander Goldscheider.

Musical Composition

Collegium Musicum's album consists of two sides, each characterized by intricate compositions and a blend of rock and classical influences. The first side features a 13-minute progressive rock piece titled "If You Want To Fall." This track showcases the band's ability to meld complex arrangements with engaging melodies. The second track on Side A, "Strange Theme Part I," seamlessly transitions into "Strange Theme Part II" on Side B, illustrating the band's thematic continuity.

Side B concludes with a remarkable 12-minute orchestral version of Joseph Haydn's "Concerto In D." This arrangement highlights the ensemble's classical roots and their innovative approach to rock music. The combination of rock instrumentation and orchestral elements creates a distinctive listening experience.
