Konvergencie
In 1971, the Czechoslovak art rock band Collegium Musicum released their double LP titled Konvergencie. This album was one of the first offerings from the newly established Opus label. The recording took place at the Czechoslovak Radio studio in Bratislava during September and October of that year.
Konvergencie presents a series of compositions that reflect the band's eclectic style. Side A features the song-suite "P. F. 1972," which includes lead vocals from Pavol Hammel. The lyrics for this suite were penned by Kamil Peteraj. The suite combines various musical elements, merging progressive and art rock influences. Side B presents "Suita Po Tisíc A Jednej Noci," a rock adaptation of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's classical piece, Scheherazade. This section demonstrates the band's ability to reinterpret classical themes within a contemporary rock framework.
The album highlights the diverse instrumentation employed by Collegium Musicum. Marián Varga plays the organ, piano, and subharchord, also contributing to the composition and production. Fedor Frešo adds depth with his bass guitar and bass mandolin, alongside vocal contributions. Dušan Hájek’s drumming and composition work further enrich the sound. František Griglák's guitar and mandolin work complements the overall texture. The album’s production was managed by Viliam Vaškovič, with recording direction by Vladimír Valovič. Sound engineers Peter Hubka and Peter Janík played crucial roles in shaping the album's audio quality.
Side D presents "Eufónia," a unique avant-garde piece composed by Marián Varga. This track features the subharchord and manipulated tape sounds, representing a departure from traditional rock forms. The use of electronic elements alongside classical instrumentation showcases the band’s innovative spirit. The diverse musical landscape of Konvergencie highlights the band’s versatility and willingness to explore new sonic territories.
Konvergencie was released as a double LP in the 2xLP format, catalog number 9113 0049/50, by the Opus label in Czechoslovakia. The album contains a total of four sides, each featuring distinct compositions that blend various musical styles.
