Introduction to Eileen

Eileen is the second studio album by the German progressive rock group Streetmark. It was released in 1977 under the Sky Records label, catalog number sky 011. This album marked a transition for the band, incorporating elements of minimalist, Berlin School ambient electronics alongside their symphonic rock roots.

Artist Lineup and Contributions

The album features Wolfgang Riechmann, who contributes lead vocals, synthesizers, electric guitar, and composition. Riechmann was previously known for his work with Spirits of Sound, collaborating with Michael Rother and Wolfgang Flür. He was joined by Dorothea Raukes on keyboards and backing vocals, and Thomas Schreiber, who provided electric guitar, backing vocals, and composition. The new bassist, Manfred Knauf, replaced Wolfgang Westphal, while Hans Schweiß handled drums and percussion. Streetmark produced the album, with cover artwork by Sigrid von Spreckelsen.

Musical Structure and Themes

The album opens with a three-part suite titled "Crazy Notion," which consists of "Crazy Notion," "I Like You," and "All Day Long." This suite sets the tone for the blend of rock and electronic influences present throughout the record. Following this, the atmospheric instrumental "Passage" leads into "Sea Of Melted Lead," and "Tomorrow," creating a varied sonic landscape. The title track "Eileen" appears on Side B, highlighting a melodic focus. Additionally, the expansive "Dreams," a 12-minute ambient space-rock piece, serves as a centerpiece of the album. The final track, "Choral," delivers a choral synth experience, rounding out the album's diverse sound palette.

Aftermath and Legacy

Following the release of Eileen, Wolfgang Riechmann went on to record his solo album Wunderbar. Tragically, he was murdered in Düsseldorf in August 1978, which cut short his promising career in music. Eileen reflects the innovative spirit of the era, blending rock with electronic music.

The album was released on Sky Records in 1977.
