Think Pink
Think Pink is the debut solo album by Twink, whose real name is John Alder. Released in 1970, this album captures the essence of the underground psychedelic rock scene in London during that era. It was produced by Mick Farren from The Deviants and recorded at Recorded Sound Studios. The album was released on Polydor Records, catalog number 2310 040, and in the U.S. under the Sire label.
The recording sessions for Think Pink took place in July 1969. Following his stint as the drummer for The Pretty Things, Twink sought to explore new musical avenues. He brought together a diverse group of musicians from London's Ladbroke Grove counterculture. This included Steve Peregrin Took from Tyrannosaurus Rex, Paul Rudolph and Viv Prince from The Deviants, and John Povey and Wally Allen from The Pretty Things. Victor Unitt, known for his work with The Edgar Broughton Band, also contributed to the album. The collaboration among these artists played a key role in the creative process, leading to the eventual formation of the Pink Fairies.
Think Pink embodies elements of rock, experimental, and progressive rock. The album features a blend of whimsical lyrics and intricate musical arrangements. Tracks like “The Last Thing on My Mind” reflect Twink’s artistic vision, with innovative soundscapes that were characteristic of the late 1960s. The album is marked by an adventurous spirit, exploring themes related to the counterculture movement of the time.
This album was made available in various formats, including vinyl and LP. The choice of vinyl as a medium aligns with the era’s music distribution practices, allowing listeners to experience the album in its full analog warmth. The album artwork and packaging also reflect the psychedelic aesthetic that was prevalent during the late 1960s.
Think Pink was released in March 1970 on Polydor Records.
