Soft Machine's second album, titled "Volume Two," was released in 1969 under the Probe label in the UK. This album marked a notable shift in the band's lineup and sound. Following a brief split in September 1968, the band reformed in December, this time without bassist and vocalist Kevin Ayers. Hugh Hopper, the band's former road manager, stepped in to play bass, bringing a fuzz-toned and more experimental approach. The recording sessions took place in early 1969, resulting in a unique blend of rock, jazz, and progressive elements.

Musical Structure

"Volume Two" is structured around two lengthy suites: "Rivmic Melodies" and "Esther's Nose Job." Each suite consists of a series of short segments that feature Dadaist wordplay, spoken interludes, and intricate time signatures. The music often defies conventional song structures, opting instead for a more exploratory form.
