Overview of Attahk

Released on March 5, 1978, Attahk is the seventh studio album by the French band Magma. This record was released under the Eurodisc label. It was recorded in 1977 and represents a shift in the band’s musical direction. Magma is known for its unique blend of jazz, rock, and avant-garde elements, often incorporating their invented Kobaian language into their compositions.

Musical Style and Composition

Attahk introduces a more accessible sound compared to earlier works. The album incorporates influences from funk, soul, rhythm and blues, gospel, and reggae. This stylistic evolution does not abandon the band’s roots in Zeuhl music. The compositions are characterized by complex rhythms and layered instrumentation. Christian Vander, the band’s founder, composed and wrote all the tracks. He also plays drums, percussion, piano, Rhodes electric piano, and Chamberlin keyboard on the album. Other musicians such as Klotz Zaspiaahk and Jacques Bolognesi contribute vocals and brass, adding depth to the arrangements.

Artwork and Presentation

The album cover for Attahk features artwork by H.R. Giger, a Swiss surrealist known for his work on the film Alien. Unlike much of Giger's previous work, the cover is vibrant and colorful while still maintaining his distinct style. The design also incorporates X-ray photography by Leni Fuhrman, which complements the surreal quality of the artwork.
