Debut Release from Faust

Faust's self-titled debut album was released on September 21, 1971, under the Polydor label. This album marked the beginning of the band's journey in the experimental rock scene of Germany. The recording took place in a converted schoolhouse near Wumme, Germany. Polydor funded the transformation of this location into a studio specifically for Faust. Uwe Nettelbeck served as the producer for this project.

Album Packaging and Design

The original pressing of the album was notable for its clear vinyl. It came packaged in a unique transparent sleeve that featured a silkscreened X-ray image of engineer Andy Hertel's raised fist. This imagery directly referenced the band's name, which translates to "fist" in German. The packaging also included a transparent plastic insert that printed the lyrics and credits in red. The sleeve design was a collaborative effort involving band member Hans-Joachim Irmler, producer Uwe Nettelbeck, and Hertel.

Musical Composition

The album consists of three primary tracks, with "Why Don't You Eat Carrots" occupying the first side. This piece unfolds over 18 minutes, showcasing the band's experimental approach. The second side features "Miss Fortune," which spans nearly 18 minutes. The compositions reflect the band's unique style, characterized by an innovative blend of sounds and structures.

Faust was formed by a group of musicians who contributed to this debut release. The band included Arnulf Meifert, Gunther Wusthoff, Joachim Irmler, Jean-Herve Peron, Rudolf Sosna, and Werner Diermaier. The engineering team, consisting of Andy Hertel and Kurt Graupner, played a key role in capturing the band's experimental sound.
