Exploring Pell Mell's "From The New World"

In 1973, the German band Pell Mell released their second studio album, "From The New World," through Philips, catalog number 6305 193. This album follows their debut, "Marburg," and continues their exploration of classical themes through the lens of progressive rock. The recording took place at Rhein-Main-Tonstudio in Frankfurt, where the group sought to blend rock instrumentation with symphonic elements.

Musical Composition and Arrangement

The album opens with a 16-minute title track, "From The New World," which draws inspiration from Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor. This ambitious suite features the electric violin work of Thomas Schmitt, who also contributes arrangements, concert flute, and vocals. The piece is complemented by Otto Pusch's organ and the guest electric guitar by Andy Kirnberger. Following this, the album includes an adaptation of J.S. Bach's "Toccata," further showcasing the band's classical influences.

Side B introduces new keyboardist Dietrich J. Noll, who plays piano and Hammond organ on original compositions "Suite I (Five Past Four A.M.)" and "Suite II (Deficiency)." These tracks maintain the symphonic rock style established in the first half of the album. Rudolf Schön provides lead vocals and acoustic guitar, while Jörg Götzfried handles bass guitar. Drummer Mitch Kniesmeijer adds depth with percussion, contributing to the album's diverse sound.
