Genesis's Second Studio Album: Trespass

Released in October 1970, Trespass is the second studio album by the British rock band Genesis. It was recorded at Trident Studios in London, beginning in July of the same year. This album marked a transition in the band's musical direction, moving from the pop-oriented sound of their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation, towards a more folk-influenced progressive rock style.

Personnel and Production

The album features five members of Genesis, with Peter Gabriel on lead vocals, flute, accordion, and tambourine. Tony Banks contributed organ, piano, Mellotron, and guitar, along with backing vocals. Michael Rutherford played acoustic and electric 12-string guitars, cello, and nylon guitar, also providing backing vocals. Anthony Phillips took on acoustic and electric guitar duties, dulcimer, and backing vocals. John Mayhew completed the lineup on drums and percussion, marking his only appearance on a Genesis studio album. The production was handled by John Anthony, while Robin Cable served as the engineer. The cover design was created by Paul Whitehead.

Musical Themes and Tracks

Trespass consists of six tracks that explore various themes and sounds. "Looking For Someone" opens the album with a blend of melodic lines and dynamic shifts, setting the stage for the progressive elements that follow. "White Mountain" incorporates folk influences, showcasing the band's ability to blend genres. "Visions Of Angels" presents ethereal melodies and intricate arrangements. "Stagnation" offers a more somber tone, while "Dusk" provides a reflective atmosphere. The closing track, "The Knife," features a more aggressive sound, hinting at the band's evolving musical complexity.

Reception and Impact

Upon release, Trespass did not chart in the UK or the US. However, it found success in Belgium, reaching number one and prompting Genesis's first overseas concerts in that country in March 1971. This album is also significant as it was the last to feature Anthony Phillips, who left the band due to stage fright and chronic bronchitis shortly after its release. Trespass remains a key record in understanding Genesis's early evolution as a band.
