Tear Gas
Tear Gas is the self-titled second and final studio album released by the Scottish heavy rock band Tear Gas. It hit the shelves in mid-1971 under the Regal Zonophone label. This album marked a significant change in the band's lineup, as drummer Ted McKenna, credited as Eddie McKenna, joined the group. The remaining members included Zal Cleminson on lead guitar, Chris Glen on bass, and Davey Batchelor handling lead vocals and guitar.
The album was produced by Tony Chapman, with engineering work carried out by Tom Allom. The cover design and sleeve photography were managed by the design group Hipgnosis, known for their striking visuals in the music industry. This collaboration resulted in a visually appealing album that matched the intensity of the music contained within.
Tear Gas features a collection of heavy guitar-driven originals primarily written by Davey Batchelor and Zal Cleminson. Notable tracks include "That's What's Real," "Lay It On Me," "Woman For Sale," and "Where Is My Answer." The album also includes an extended cover of Jethro Tull's "Love Story," which stands out for its heavy interpretation. Additionally, the band incorporated a live rock 'n' roll medley that combines "Jailhouse Rock" and "All Shook Up," showcasing their energetic performance style.
Following the release of Tear Gas, Davey Batchelor departed from the band. The remaining trio of Cleminson, Glen, and McKenna continued to perform together. They joined forces with keyboardist Hugh McKenna and collaborated with Alex Harvey in 1972 to form The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
The album was released in vinyl format, typical for the era, and has become a collector's item among fans of hard rock. The combination of powerful guitar riffs and energetic vocals makes this album a notable entry in the genre's history. The album was recorded in 1971, during a time when heavy rock was gaining traction in the UK.
