Clear Blue Sky, originally titled "Play It Loud," is the debut studio album by the London-based power trio of the same name. Released in December 1970 under the Vertigo label (catalog number 6360 013), this album quickly became sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of rock music. The album was recorded at Island Studios in Basing Street, London, during the spring of 1970.

Lineup and Production

The band consists of John Simms on lead electric and acoustic guitars, who also provides lead vocals and is the sole songwriter. At just 18 years old during the recording, Simms showcases impressive musicianship. He is joined by Mark Sheather on bass guitar and Ken White on drums and percussion. The album was produced by Patrick Campbell-Lyons, a founding member of the UK psychedelic band Nirvana. Sound recording engineering was handled by Roger Beale, further contributing to the album’s distinct sound.

Artwork and Design

One of the standout features of the album is its gatefold cover artwork designed by Roger Dean. This was among his earliest works for the famous Vertigo "Swirl" imprint. Dean’s illustrations have since become highly collectible, and this album cover is a prime example of his artistic style prior to his later work with bands like Yes and Uriah Heep.

Musical Composition

The album is characterized by a blend of hard rock, progressive rock, heavy psych, and space rock influences. It opens with the monumental "Journey To The Inside Of The Sun," an 18:30-minute suite divided into three movements: "Sweet Leaf," "The Rocket Ride," and "I'm Comin' Home." The second side features tracks such as "You Mystify," "Tool Of My Trade," "My Heaven," and "Birdcatcher." These songs demonstrate Simms' guitar prowess, including fuzz leads and wah-wah solos, all supported by solid rhythmic foundations from the bass and drums.
