Formation and Early Work

'Aina, which means "land" or "earth" in Hawaiian, was formed in 1977 when Howard Shapiro and Michael Joao met in Makaha, Oahu. Initially named Earth, the band later adopted the name 'Aina. In 1978, they recorded a 7-inch single for Greenpeace titled "Greenpeace: To Save the Whales." This early track highlighted their commitment to environmental issues, a theme that would continue through their work.

Recording "Lead Me To The Garden"

In 1980, 'Aina entered Audissey Recording Studio in Honolulu to record their sole LP, "Lead Me To The Garden." Released on their own label, Kumanu Music, the album showcases a blend of folk and rock influences. The track "The Harmony Song" opens the album, setting a tone of unity and peace. Other tracks such as "Nuclear Power" and "America Be One Man" reflect on contemporary social issues, while "Lead Me To The Garden" serves as the album's title track, inviting listeners to explore themes of hope and renewal.

Musical and Production Credits

The album features contributions from various musicians. Michael Joao arranged the music and provided vocals and twelve-string guitar. Butch Jensen played bass, while Roscoe Wright and Walter Rickard handled the drums. Tony Bourn's electric guitar work adds texture to the sound, and Joe Macaranas contributed steel guitar. Dennis Graue was responsible for keyboard arrangements. The album was produced by Howard Shapiro, who also provided vocals. Jim Linkner took on the engineering and mastering responsibilities, ensuring a polished final product.
