Introduction to Trifle's "First Meeting"

In early 1971, British band Trifle released their sole studio album, "First Meeting," through Dawn Records. This album represents an intriguing fusion of jazz-rock and progressive elements, rooted in the band's brass-heavy arrangements and soulful vocal performances.

Band Origins and Members

Trifle evolved from the London-based beat group George Bean & The Runners, which was active during the 1960s. The band featured George Bean as the lead vocalist and percussionist. He was joined by a talented lineup that included Dick Cuthell on trumpet and flugelhorn, Barrie Martin on saxophone, Alan Fealdman on keyboards, John Hitchen on guitar, Patrick "Speedy" King on bass, and Chico Greenwood on drums. Cuthell would later gain recognition for his work with bands like The Specials and Madness.

Production Details

The album was produced by John Schroeder and engineered by Geoff Calver at Pye Studios in London in September 1970. This collaboration resulted in a recording that effectively captured the energy and complexity of Trifle's sound.

Musical Style

"First Meeting" features a blend of horn-heavy jazz-rock, gritty Hammond organ, and funk-inspired polyrhythms. The album includes nine tracks that explore a variety of themes and musical styles. Notable tracks include the punchy cover of "One Way Glass" by Manfred Mann Chapter Three and an arrangement of Cat Stevens' "But I Might Die Tonight," both showcasing the band's unique approach to familiar material. The lengthy composition "Is It Loud?" pushes the boundaries of progressive rock with its intricate arrangements.

Tragic Disbandment

Trifle's journey was cut short following the untimely death of lead singer George Bean in 1971. The band disbanded shortly after the release of "First Meeting," leaving behind a single album that reflects the rich musical landscape of early 1970s Britain.
