Blackthorn
The self-titled debut album by the Irish electric folk band Blackthorn was released in 1977 under W.H.M. Records. This album features a blend of traditional folk material and selected cover songs, showcasing the band's musical versatility. The lineup consists of lead vocalist Nina Szifris, accompanied by musicians Steve Cross, Pete Onions, and Bryan Widdowson.
Blackthorn's album incorporates both original compositions and interpretations of well-known tracks. Among the covers is Gerry Rafferty's "Rick Rack," which appears prominently on the first side. Neil Young's "After the Goldrush" is another highlight, reflecting the band's ability to reimagine classic songs within their unique folk framework. Leonard Cohen's "That's No Way to Say Goodbye" also finds a place, adding depth to the album's lyrical content.
Instrumentally, the album features two instrumental tracks, "Blackthorn Instrumental No.1" and "Blackthorn Instrumental No.2." These pieces allow the band to showcase their musicianship without lyrics, blending traditional Irish sounds with contemporary influences. The inclusion of traditional songs like "Yellow Haired Laddie" and "Broom Besoms Incorporating Mrs. McLeod's Reel" further emphasizes the band's roots in folk music.
One of the standout original tracks is "Can't Hold A Candle To You," which demonstrates the band's songwriting abilities. Another notable inclusion is "Steve Bayes - Lily's Song," highlighting the collaborative spirit within the group. The album also features Jim Croce's "In A Song," providing listeners with a familiar melody reinterpreted through Blackthorn's distinct sound.
Blackthorn's debut album serves as an introduction to their electric folk style, blending traditional and contemporary influences. Their second album, "II Electric Folk," was released in 1979.
