Toad
Toad was formed in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970. The band included guitarist Vic Vergeat, bassist Werner Fröhlich, and drummer Cosimo Lampis, all of whom had previously played in the band Brainticket. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1971, marked the beginning of their recording career.
The album was recorded in December 1970 at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Martin Birch, known for his work with various rock acts, served as the engineer for this project. The album was produced by Chris Schwegler and released on the Hallelujah label. The artwork for the album was designed by Elso Schiavo.
Toad's music blends hard rock and progressive rock elements. The seven tracks on the album reflect this style through varied arrangements and instrumental proficiency. One of the standout tracks, "Life Goes On," showcases an extended duration of 11 minutes and 48 seconds, providing listeners with an immersive experience. Other notable tracks include "Cotton Wood Hill" and "They Say I'm Mad," each contributing to the album's overall dynamic sound.
Following the completion of the album, vocalist Benjamin Jaeger left Toad and was not replaced. This change led to a shift in the band's dynamics, with Vic Vergeat taking on vocal duties in later releases. Vergeat's guitar work is a defining feature of the band's sound, characterized by intricate riffs and solos.
After the release of their debut album, Vic Vergeat continued to pursue a career in music. He formed the Vic Vergeat Band and later another group known as The Bank. Vic Vergeat passed away on November 1, 2023, marking the end of an era for the band and its music.
