Toad was formed in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970. The band included guitarist Vic Vergeat, bassist Werner Fröhlich, and drummer Cosimo Lampis, all of whom had previously played in the band Brainticket. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1971, marked the beginning of their recording career.

The album was recorded in December 1970 at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Martin Birch, known for his work with various rock acts, served as the engineer for this project.
