Takes A Trip
Released in 1969 under Columbia Records, "Takes A Trip" is an album by English keyboardist Don Shinn. Known for his skill on the Hammond organ, Shinn brings a blend of classical, jazz, rock, and psychedelic influences to this collection of five instrumental tracks. The album features a unique fusion of styles that reflects the experimental spirit of the late 1960s.
The album opens with "Pits Of Darkness," a piece that sets a moody tone with its intricate organ work. "Temples With Prophets" follows, showcasing Shinn's interest in esoteric philosophy. This track incorporates rich harmonic textures and rhythmic elements, revealing the depth of Shinn's musicality. "A Minor Explosion," originally released as a single in 1966, stands out with its vibrant energy and showcases Shinn's proficiency on the organ. Other tracks include "Jolly Dance" and "Hearts Of Gladness," which further explore Shinn's diverse influences, combining elements of jazz and rock in unique ways.
Shinn is supported by a talented group of musicians. Paul Hodgson on electric guitar, Eric Ford on bass, and Peter Wolf on drums complete the lineup. Their contributions complement Shinn's organ and piano work, creating a cohesive sound that reflects the era's musical experimentation. The album was initially intended to be titled "Don Shinn... Takes A Trip," but Columbia Records later changed it to "Temples With Prophets" for its UK release. Interestingly, the French edition retained the original title, accompanied by different artwork.
Before this album, Don Shinn was part of several bands, including The Lonely Ones and The Soul Agents. He gained recognition for his rock arrangements of classical pieces, which influenced many musicians, including Keith Emerson. Shinn's career included work as a session musician, notably on James Taylor's debut album. After living in Norway for many years, he returned to Southampton in 1995.
Don Shinn passed away on February 18, 2023, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of music.
