Collapsing Singvögel Rückwärts & Co.
Amon Duul originated as an art commune in Munich in 1967. The group consisted of several core members, including bassist Ulrich Leopold, drummer Peter Leopold, and guitarist Rainer Bauer. They engaged in extensive jam sessions that defined their early sound. By 1969, Amon Duul recorded their second album, Collapsing Singvogel Ruckwarts & Co., released under the Metronome label.
This album draws upon material from the same sessions that produced their debut album, Psychedelic Underground. However, Collapsing Singvogel Ruckwarts & Co. demonstrates a more refined use of studio techniques. The band incorporated multi-tracking, sound effects, tape splices, and cross-fades to enhance their raw jam recordings. This production approach marks a shift from their earlier, more straightforward jam style.
The album features eleven tracks that exhibit a variety of musical ideas. For instance, "Booster (Kolkraben)" opens the album with its energetic rhythms, while "Lua-Lua-He (Chor Der Wiesenpieper)" presents a brief yet intriguing sonic exploration. "Nachrichten Aus Cannabistan" and "Shattering & Fading (Flattermanner)" further illustrate the band's ability to blend different musical elements. Each track contributes to the album's overall experimental nature.
The inside gatefold artwork for the album was crafted by J.H. Loffler, adding a visual element that complements the music. The cover art reflects the experimental ethos of the group during this period. The album was mastered by G.F. Pfanz, ensuring that the sound quality matched the band's innovative approach to music.
Amon Duul is recognized as a precursor to the Krautrock movement, alongside the more structured group Amon Duul II, which emerged from the same commune. Both groups played crucial roles in shaping the landscape of German rock music during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Collapsing Singvogel Ruckwarts & Co. was released in 1969, catalog number SMLP 012. This album reflects the evolving sound of Amon Duul as they navigated the intersection of rock and experimental music.
