Nonostante Tutto
Free Wave System emerged from Turin, Italy, in the late 1970s. The group formed from the remnants of the progressive rock band Assoluto Naturale. Their sole studio LP, titled "Nonostante Tutto" (Notwithstanding Everything), was released in 1981 under the Drums label, catalog number EDL 2094. The album represents a shift towards an entirely instrumental jazz-fusion sound, showcasing the talents of its four members.
The album features ten instrumental tracks that exemplify the late-period Italian jazz-prog movement. Mauro Ravizza plays tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, as well as flute. His saxophone leads are fluid and expressive, leading the listener through intricate melodies. Luca Morandi contributes with acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Hammond organ, and Minimoog synthesizer. His melodic lines and soaring solos enhance the album's dynamic range.
Luciano Devietti provides the foundation with electric and fretless bass, delivering tight grooves that anchor the compositions. Enrico Morandi adds depth with his drumming and percussion, creating a rhythmic backbone that complements the harmonic explorations of the other musicians. Together, they create a cohesive sound that draws comparisons to notable Italian jazz-rock outfits such as Perigeo and Arti & Mestieri, as well as international acts like Return to Forever.
"Nonostante Tutto" was recorded at Minirec Studio in Turin, Italy, in 1981. The production captures the energy and spontaneity of the performances. Each track varies in complexity and mood, reflecting the musicians' improvisational skills and their ability to blend genres seamlessly. Tracks like "Oltre Il Tempo" and "Xenophobia" highlight both intricate arrangements and energetic solos, while "La Coda Di Mr. Freeman" showcases a more contemplative atmosphere.
Free Wave System's "Nonostante Tutto" serves as a significant entry in the catalog of Italian progressive jazz-rock. The album features ten tracks and was recorded in 1981.
