Introduction to Omega 5

Released in 1973, "Omega 5" (also referred to as "Szvit") marks a significant entry in the discography of the Hungarian rock band Omega. This album was released under the Pepita label, catalog number SLPX 17457. Recorded in Budapest, it represents the band's fifth studio effort and showcases their evolving sound.

Musical Composition

"Omega 5" is distinguished by its incorporation of the Moog synthesizer, which features prominently on the track "A Madár." This album is recognized as the first Hungarian rock LP to include such a synthesizer, marking a shift in the band's musical landscape. The record consists of two sides, with Side A presenting six tracks that combine elements of progressive rock and art rock. These pieces include "A Hazug Lány," "Én Elmegyek," and "Járt Itt Egy Boldog Ember."

On the other hand, Side B features an extensive orchestral suite titled "Szvit," which runs for 20 minutes and 30 seconds. This suite is further divided into six movements: "Ébredés," "A Malomban," "Hazafelé," "A Hetedik Napon," "Délutáni Szerelem," and "Van Aki Nyugtalan." The inclusion of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra adds a rich, symphonic layer to the progressive rock foundation laid by the band.

Band Lineup and Production

The album features a lineup that includes János Kóbor on lead vocals, László Benkő on Moog synthesizer, organ, piano, and vocals, György Molnár on electric guitars, Tamás Mihály on bass guitar, piano, and vocals, and Ferenc Debreczeni on drums and percussion. The production was handled by András Székely and Omega, with sound engineering by László Csintalan. The visual elements of the album were crafted by Imre Kolma for artwork and graphics, while Miklós Csák contributed photography.

Recording Venue

All tracks on "Omega 5" were recorded at MHV Studios in Budapest, Hungary, during 1973. This location played a crucial role in capturing the complex arrangements and the innovative sound that Omega sought to achieve with this album.

Omega 5 features the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra on the orchestral suite "Szvit."
