"Sky 2," the second album from the British-Australian supergroup Sky, was released in March or April of 1980 under the Ariola label. This double LP, cataloged as ASLY 1002, quickly ascended to the top of the UK Albums Chart, achieving the status of a UK Number One album. It was certified Double Platinum, indicating strong sales and widespread popularity.

Musical Composition

The album features a combination of classical arrangements and progressive rock originals. A highlight of the album is the adaptation of J.S. Bach's "Toccata in D minor," which became a commercial success and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. The track exemplifies the band's ability to blend classical music with a rock sensibility, drawing listeners from both genres.

In addition to the Bach adaptation, "Sky 2" showcases original compositions that emphasize the members’ virtuosity. Francis Monkman's "FIFO" (First In, First Out) is a 17-minute composition divided into four movements, influenced by computer programming. The album opens with "Hotta," a high-tempo piece that incorporates Spanish fusion elements. Kevin Peek's "Sahara" presents a distinct melodic structure, while Herbie Flowers contributes "Tuba Smarties," a light-hearted piece featuring the tuba. Another standout is "Scipio," which extends over 12 minutes and melds classical and progressive rock influences.

Musicians and Production

The lineup for "Sky 2" includes distinguished musicians. John Williams plays both classical and electric guitars, while Francis Monkman is responsible for keyboards, piano, and synths, and also serves as the composer for several tracks. Kevin Peek contributes acoustic and electric guitars along with his compositional talents. Herbie Flowers brings a unique touch with his bass guitar and tuba, and Tristan Fry enhances the album with drums, percussion, and various mallet instruments.

The production of the album was a collaborative effort involving Sky, along with producers Tony Clark and Haydn Bendall. Recording took place at Morgan Studios and the famous Abbey Road Studios in London during the years 1979 and 1980.
