Out Of Our Hands
"Out Of Our Hands," released in August 1973, is the third and final studio album by the British progressive rock band Flash. The album was released under Sovereign (catalog number SVNA 7260) in the UK and Capitol Records (ST-11218) in the US. This release comes in a vinyl LP format with a gatefold design, featuring artwork by the well-known design duo Hipgnosis, recognized for their surreal imagery.
The album presents a blend of rock and progressive rock influences, with elements of symphonic prog. Flash self-produced this record at Morgan Studios and Advision Studios in London. The lineup includes original Yes guitarist Peter Banks, who contributes electric and acoustic guitars, as well as ARP and Moog synthesizers. Bassist Ray Bennett plays a multi-instrumental role, utilizing the Mellotron, Clavinet, acoustic piano, and guitar, adding depth to the band's sound.
Colin Carter takes on the lead vocals and percussion, while Mike Hough rounds out the group on drums and percussion instruments, including congas and tabla. The album comprises nine tracks that incorporate intricate compositions and vocal harmonies, reflecting a loose thematic concept. The acoustic overture "Open Sky" introduces listeners to the album's soundscape, followed by tracks like "None The Wiser" and the punchy "Man Of Honour." The three-part suite "Psychosync" is noteworthy for its complexity, and the six-minute track "Manhattan Morning (Christmas '72)" showcases the band's ability to blend lyrical storytelling and musical experimentation.
The engineering for "Out Of Our Hands" was handled by Geoff Young, Mike Butcher, and Mike Dunn, with Paul Northfield serving as the assistant engineer. This attention to detail in the production contributes to the album's rich sound, allowing the diverse instrumentation to shine through. The combination of synthesizers, guitars, and orchestral elements creates a vibrant auditory experience.
