Darkness To Light
Sweet Smoke's second studio album, Darkness To Light, was released in 1973 under the Harvest label in Germany. This album followed their debut and marked a distinct evolution in their sound. The band, known for its unique blend of progressive rock and jazz influences, recorded the album at EMI Intertone Studios in Heemstede, Netherlands. The engineering was handled by Eddy Hilberts, while John G. Möring took on the role of producer.
Darkness To Light reflects a more structured approach compared to the band's earlier work. The sound is infused with spiritual themes, influenced by the band's travels to India and their studies of Eastern philosophies. The incorporation of modal ragas, acoustic jazz, and folk melodies is evident throughout the album. This fusion creates a rich tapestry of sounds, seamlessly blending chamber strings with the improvisational elements typical of progressive rock.
The album consists of six tracks spread over two sides. Side 1 opens with "Just An Empty Dream" and "I'd Rather Burn Than Disappear," leading into the 13-minute epic "Kundalini." This track features tenpura percussion, adding an Indian musical flavor. On Side 2, "Believe Me My Friends" transitions to "Show Me The Way To The War," culminating in the title suite "Darkness To Light," which includes contributions from cello, alto sax, and flute. These instruments enhance the album's varied sound landscape.
The lineup for Sweet Smoke during this recording included Marvin Kaminowitz on guitar and vocals, Steve Rosenstein on guitar and vocals, Andy Dershin on bass, Jay Dorfman on drums and percussion, Michael Paris on saxophone and flute, Jeffrey Dershin on piano and percussion, and Rochus Kuhn on cello. Each member contributed to the distinctive sound of the album, with their diverse backgrounds and musical skills.
Darkness To Light was released on vinyl as an LP and features an intricate blend of musical styles across its tracks. The album is cataloged under the number 1C 062-29 471. The recording techniques employed by the production team allowed for a clear representation of the various instrumental elements featured throughout the album.
