Getting To This
"Getting To This" is the second studio album by Blodwyn Pig, released in April 1970 under Chrysalis Records. This British band blends elements of progressive blues-rock and jazz-fusion, creating a distinct sound that is evident throughout the album. The record achieved commercial success, reaching No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart.
The album features a lineup that includes guitarist and vocalist Mick Abrahams, multi-instrumentalist Jack Lancaster, bassist Andy Pyle, and drummer Ron Berg. Jack Lancaster contributes flutes, various saxophones, electric violin, and cornet to the mix. The album also features guest pianist and reciter Graham Waller. Production was handled by Andy Johns, with cutting engineer Geoff Calver and executive producer Chris Wright overseeing the project.
"Getting To This" opens with the heavy blues track "Drive Me," setting a strong tone for the album. Another standout is "Variations On Nainos," which showcases the band's ability to blend different musical styles. The acoustic ballad "See My Way" offers a contrast in sound, providing a more intimate listening experience. One of the album's key features is Jack Lancaster's four-part jazz suite titled "San Francisco Sketches," which includes tracks like "Beach Scape" and "Fisherman's Wharf." The acoustic piece "Toys" and the anti-war rocker "Send Your Son To Die" further illustrate the band's diverse musical palette.
The album was released on vinyl, in the LP format, and is classified under the rock and prog rock genres. Its combination of blues, jazz, and rock elements makes it a unique entry in the early 1970s music scene.
Upon its release, "Getting To This" reached No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart, demonstrating the band's appeal at the time. The album is cataloged as ILPS 9122 / CHR 1005.
