Formed by organist Dave Stewart, bassist Mont Campbell, and drummer Clive Brooks, the band transitioned to their new name after guitarist Steve Hillage departed in 1968. Egg's self-titled debut album was released in 1970 under the Deram label, showcasing their distinctive sound as a trio without a guitarist.

The album was recorded in October 1969 at Lansdowne and Trident Studios in London. Stewart and Campbell were still teenagers during the recording process.
