Egg
Egg is a British progressive rock band that emerged from the earlier group Uriel. Formed by organist Dave Stewart, bassist Mont Campbell, and drummer Clive Brooks, the band transitioned to their new name after guitarist Steve Hillage departed in 1968. Egg's self-titled debut album was released in 1970 under the Deram label, showcasing their distinctive sound as a trio without a guitarist.
The album was recorded in October 1969 at Lansdowne and Trident Studios in London. Stewart and Campbell were still teenagers during the recording process. The album features complex arrangements and compositions, utilizing odd time signatures that set the band apart from their contemporaries. Notably, the album includes a version of Bach's "Fugue In D Minor" and the extended "Symphony No. 2," which draws inspiration from Edvard Grieg's themes.
Egg's music is characterized by intricate structures and a blend of progressive rock elements. The opening track, "Bulb," is a brief introduction that leads into "While Growing My Hair." This song showcases the band's lyrical and musical creativity. Tracks such as "I Will Be Absorbed" and "They Laughed When I Sat Down At The Piano..." further highlight their experimental approach. The album's centerpiece, "Symphony No. 2," spans 24 minutes and is divided into several movements, each demonstrating the band's technical proficiency.
All members of Egg contributed to the writing of the album, with Brooks, Stewart, and Campbell collaborating on most tracks. The production of the album was overseen by the band itself, ensuring their artistic vision was maintained. The engineering work was handled by Peter Gallen and Roy Thomas Baker, the latter being known for his future work with Queen. The design and photography for the album cover were created by Peter Chapman and David Wedgbury, respectively.
Egg's debut album was released in 1970 and is available in vinyl format as an LP. The band's innovative sound and approach to composition reflect the experimental spirit of the era.
