El Tor
"El Tor" is the sole studio album by Città Frontale, released in 1975 under Fonit (catalog LPX 45). This album marks a notable moment in Italian rock history, particularly within the progressive rock genre. The band was formed by Lino Vairetti and Massimo Guarino, both of whom were integral members of the earlier ensemble Osanna. Following a temporary split of Osanna in 1974, they resurrected the name Città Frontale, which was originally used in their pre-Osanna days.
This album is a theatrical concept work that delves into the cholera epidemic that struck Naples in 1973. The title "El Tor" refers to the *Vibrio cholerae* biotype strain responsible for the outbreak. The music blends the avant-garde rock intensity reminiscent of Osanna with Mediterranean folk elements. Tracks feature jazz-fusion brass arrangements, soaring Mellotron, and improvisational saxophone and flute performances by Enzo Avitabile.
The album opens with "Alba Di Una Città," setting an atmospheric tone for the journey that follows. The title track, "El Tor," captures the intensity of the narrative, while "Duro Lavoro" adds a layer of complexity with its intricate instrumentation. The closing track, "Equilibrio Divino?," offers a pastoral conclusion to the album's thematic exploration.
Città Frontale features a diverse lineup of musicians. Lino Vairetti takes the lead on vocals and both acoustic and electric guitars, contributing to the Mellotron and harmonica sections. Massimo Guarino, the founding drummer of Osanna, provides rhythm through drums, percussion, and vibraphone. Enzo Avitabile enhances the sonic landscape with his work on tenor and alto saxophones, alongside the concert flute. Other notable contributors include Gianni Guarracino on electric and classical guitars, and Paolo Raffone on acoustic piano and Hammond organ. The album was produced and arranged by the band itself, showcasing their artistic vision.
"El Tor" was recorded in 1975 at Fonit Cetra Studios in Milan, Italy. This location was pivotal for many Italian artists at the time, providing a facility that embraced innovative recording techniques.
