Release Overview

CMU (Contemporary Music Unit) released their second and final studio album, "Space Cabaret," in February 1973 under Transatlantic Records (TRA 259). This album showcases a blend of various music styles, including space rock, jazz-rock, and elements of the Canterbury scene. The recording took place at Rockfield Studios in Wales during late 1972, with Fritz Fryer serving as producer.

Lineup Changes

The lineup underwent significant changes before the album's release. The addition of keyboardist Leary Hasson, formerly with Marsupilami, brought a new dimension to the band's sound. Bassist Steve Cook, who later joined Gilgamesh and Soft Machine, and singer-songwriter Richard Joseph also joined the group. The band was rounded out by Larraine Odell on vocals, Ian Hamlett on guitars, and Roger Odell on drums.

Musical Composition

"Space Cabaret" is characterized by its cosmic sci-fi concept, which is evident throughout the album's structure. The first side features a continuous four-part suite titled "Space Cabaret." This suite includes tracks like "Archway 272," "Song From The 4th Era," and "A Distant Thought, A Point Of Light." The side concludes with the quirky track "Doctor, Am I Normal?"

The second side offers two lengthy progressive pieces. The first is "Dream," a haunting exploration lasting nearly 10 minutes. The second track, "Lightshine," features a Mellotron and guitar crescendo that extends for over 10 minutes, showcasing the band's technical prowess and compositional skill.

Artwork and Packaging

The album's artwork, created by Chris Moore, complements its sci-fi theme with a dazzling retro-futuristic style. The vinyl is presented in a gatefold format and includes a lyric insert, enhancing the physical experience of the album.

Recording Details

Fritz Fryer, known for his work with The Four Pennies, played a crucial role in the album's production. The sound was recorded by a skilled team, including Ralph Down, Pat Moran, and Kingsley Ward. "Space Cabaret" reflects the creative synergy among its members and the technical expertise of the production team.
