Gun
Gun, often known as The Gun, is the self-titled debut studio album by the British power trio. Released in late 1968 by CBS Records, this album embodies elements of psychedelic hard rock and proto-metal. The band consists of brothers Adrian Gurvitz on lead guitar and vocals, Paul Gurvitz on bass and vocals, and drummer Louie Farrell.
This release is particularly notable for featuring the first commercial album cover designed by Roger Dean. Dean would go on to become famous for his work with bands like Yes and Uriah Heep. The artwork for Gun sets the stage for the auditory experience contained within the album.
The album opens with "Race With The Devil," a proto-metal single that reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart. This track gained additional recognition after being quoted live by Jimi Hendrix at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. The song has also been covered by artists such as Judas Priest and Girlschool, showcasing its lasting appeal within the rock genre.
Musically, the album features heavy riffing, brass flourishes, and orchestration. Tracks like "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee" and "Rupert's Travels" demonstrate extended psychedelic jamming, while "Yellow Cab Man" and "Sunshine" incorporate diverse sounds and textures. The album culminates with the 11-minute track "Take Off," offering an expansive jam that encapsulates the band's experimental approach.
Gun's self-titled debut was released during a vibrant period in the UK music scene. The late 1960s saw the rise of various rock genres, and Gun's blend of hard rock and psychedelic elements contributed to this dynamic landscape. Their music reflects the experimentation prevalent in the era.
Gun was released in late 1968 on CBS Records (S 63552).
