Sergio Dias
Sérgio Dias, co-founder of the influential Brazilian band Os Mutantes, released his debut solo album in 1980. Titled simply Sergio Dias, this album marks a significant departure from his earlier work with the band. Dias is known for his virtuosic guitar skills and his ability to blend diverse musical styles, which is evident in this collection.
This self-titled album presents a fusion of genres, combining jazz-rock, funk, soul, and Latin influences. After the breakup of Os Mutantes in 1978, Dias spent time in Europe, where he absorbed various musical influences before returning to Brazil. The result is a rich tapestry of sounds that incorporates progressive guitar techniques alongside traditional Brazilian music elements (MPB). The album is produced by Sérgio Dias himself and Márcio Moura, which allows for a personal touch in its creation.
The album features several guest artists that enhance its appeal. Tropicalia legends Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa contribute their vocals to the tracks "Não Quero Ver Você Dançar" and "Aí, Pirada!" respectively. Additionally, singer Jane Duboc performs on "Arigatô-Harakiri," while Indian classical violinist L. Shankar adds his unique flair to the mix. These collaborations highlight the diverse musical influences present in the album and reflect the interconnectedness of different musical traditions.
Among the ten tracks, "Intro - Não Quero Ver Você Dançar" sets the tone with its engaging grooves. "Brazilian New Wave" illustrates the fusion of contemporary sounds with traditional elements. "Corações De Carnaval" and "Eunice" further explore the intricate melodies that characterize Dias's style. The instrumentation throughout the album showcases his guitar prowess and the rhythmic complexity typical of Brazilian music.
Sergio Dias was released on CBS Records in Brazil, catalog number 138.167. This vinyl LP serves as a landmark in Dias's career, marking his transition from a band member to a solo artist. The album is a significant artifact from the Brazilian music scene of the late 20th century.
