Pieces
"Pieces" is the fourth and final studio album by British blues-rock band Juicy Lucy, released in 1972. The album came out on Polydor Records in the UK and was also distributed by Atco in the United States. This release marked a significant evolution in the band's sound, blending elements of pub rock, boogie-rock, country-blues, and roots rock.
The album features a restructured lineup led by Paul Williams, a powerhouse vocalist known for his dynamic range. Micky Moody contributes with lead and slide guitar. The band also includes keyboardist Jean Roussel, who later became a notable session player for artists like Cat Stevens and Bob Marley. On bass, Andy Pyle, previously of Blodwyn Pig and Savoy Brown, adds depth to the sound, while drummer Ron Berg, also an ex-member of Blodwyn Pig, completes the lineup.
"Pieces" was produced by Bruce Rowland and engineered by Martin Levan at Morgan Studios in London. The production quality reflects the band's transition to a more energetic sound, which was characteristic of the early 1970s rock scene in the UK.
The album consists of nine tracks, including a mix of original songs and covers. One notable cover is Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," which showcases the band’s ability to reinterpret classic rock. Another track, "It Ain't Easy," was written by Ron Davies and has been recorded by artists such as David Bowie and Three Dog Night. "How Can A Poor Man Stand These Times And Live," a song by Blind Alfred Reed, also features on the album, highlighting the band’s blues roots.
Following the release of "Pieces," Juicy Lucy undertook a supporting tour but disbanded later in 1972. This marked the end of an era for the band, which had carved a niche in the blues-rock genre during its active years.
The album "Pieces" was released on Polydor Records with the catalog number 2310 160.
