Introduction to Assagai

Assagai, the self-titled debut album from the London-based Afro-rock and Afrobeat group of the same name, was released in early 1971. This album arrived on the Vertigo "swirl" label, catalog number 6360 030. The band featured a lineup of South African musicians in exile, including alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, cornetist Mongezi Feza, and drummer Louis Moholo. They were joined by Nigerian guitarist Fred Coker, bassist Charles Ononogbo, and tenor saxophonist Bizo Mngqikana.

Musical Composition

The album is characterized by heavy Afro-funk horn arrangements and infectious highlife polyrhythms. The guitar work is blistering, and the drum breaks are sharp and impactful. The opening track, "Telephone Girl," is an Afro-funk piece written by members of the British prog band Jade Warrior. Following this, "Akasa" and a blazing instrumental Afro-rock rendition of The Beatles' "Hey Jude" further illustrate the group's diverse influences. Other tracks include "Cocoa," "Irin Ajolawa," co-written with Tony Duhig, "Ayieo," and "Beka," composed by Dudu Pukwana. The album closes with "I'll Wait For You."

Production and Artwork

The album was produced by Dave Watson, who played a crucial role in shaping its sound. The cover artwork was designed by Winston Branch, a painter from St. Lucia. The visual presentation complements the vibrant and energetic music found within the album.

Conclusion

Assagai's debut album is an exploration of Afro-rock and funk, blending multiple musical traditions. It contains eight tracks and was released in 1971.
