"Labyrinth" is a conceptual jazz-rock fusion suite by British trumpeter and composer Ian Carr, released in 1973 by Vertigo Records. The album was commissioned by the Park Lane Group and premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in March of the same year. The concept is inspired by the ancient Greek myth of the Minotaur and Theseus, navigating King Minos' Cretan labyrinth. This thematic foundation adds a layer of narrative depth to the music.

In addition to Ian Carr on trumpet, the ensemble includes British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone, who contributes haunting wordless soprano vocal lines. Keyboardists Gordon Beck and Dave MacRae provide textures through the Hohner pianet and Fender Rhodes, respectively. Produced by Ian Carr and Roger Wake, "Labyrinth" was recorded and mixed at Phonogram Studios in London during March 1973. The production captures a blend of intricate brass counterpoint and floating electric keyboards, combined with pulsating jazz-rock grooves. Avant-garde electronic textures are created with the VCS3 synthesizer, played by Paddy Kingsland, a pioneer of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This amalgamation of styles contributes to a unique sound that defies genre boundaries.

Structure and Flow

The album is structured as seven continuous movements, each flowing seamlessly into the next. Movements include titles such as "Origins," "Bull Dance," "Ariadne," and "Naxos." The transitions between these segments create an immersive listening experience, maintaining thematic integrity throughout the suite. The music blends modal improvisations with a variety of styles, showcasing the musicians' versatility and creativity.
