Introduction to Moosknukkl Groovband

Moosknukkl Groovband is a self-titled album released in 1973 by the Canadian-German rock ensemble of the same name. The group recorded their sole studio album during the summer of 1972 at Windrose-Dumont-Time Studios and Star-Music-Studio in Hamburg, Germany. The album was released on the Spiegelei label under the catalog number 28 518-9 U.

Formation and Members

The band was formed by a collective of Canadian musicians residing in Germany. The lineup includes Mike Lewis on electric piano, Hammond organ, percussion, and lead vocals. Lewis had previously collaborated with the influential producer Conny Plank on an avant-garde project called Wired. Other members are Tommy Graham, who played electric and acoustic guitars, percussion, and provided vocals; John Morton on bass guitar and vocals; and Brother Josh, also known as Peter Collins, who played drums, Indian tabla, percussion, and contributed vocals.

Production Insights

The album was produced and engineered by Conny Plank, a key figure in the Krautrock movement. He worked alongside Michael Lewis, who also served as a co-producer and primary composer. The cover design was crafted by Peter Bruce. This collaboration of talents resulted in a distinctive sound that blends various genres.

Musical Style and Tracks

Musically, the album combines heavy blues-rock, funk-infused Krautrock grooves, progressive organ runs, and elements of East-West raga-rock experimentation. The sound has drawn comparisons to bands such as Traffic, Spooky Tooth, The Band, and Embryo. The album features six tracks, including the energetic "Run For Your Life" and the extended 8-minute piece "Take Your Time." Another highlight is "Nahi Bole," which showcases a tabla-driven raga-rock exploration. The album closes with a 9-minute jam titled "That Ain't All."

Legacy of the Album

Moosknukkl Groovband's self-titled album serves as a unique artifact of the early 1970s rock scene, characterized by its eclectic fusion of styles. The recording process took place in Hamburg, Germany, which was a notable hub for experimental music during that era.
