Time And Tide
Released in May 1975, "Time And Tide" is the fourth studio album by the British progressive rock band Greenslade. This album marked a transition for the band, as it was the first to feature guitarist Martin Briley, who replaced Tony Reeves on bass. The inclusion of guitar was a departure from the band's original concept, which had focused solely on keyboards and vocals.
The album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London from February 3 to 23, 1975. One track, "Time," was recorded separately at Sawmill Studios in Fowey, Cornwall. This track included the Treverva Male Voice Choir, conducted by Edgar Kessell, adding a unique vocal element to the album. The mixing process began shortly after recording, on February 28, 1975.
"Time And Tide" features a diverse range of musical styles, characteristic of the progressive rock genre. The opening track, "Animal Farm," showcases the band’s ability to blend intricate melodies with thoughtful lyrics. "Newsworth" continues this trend, featuring a combination of piano and synthesizer that underlines the band's distinct sound. The album also includes shorter pieces, such as "Time," which serves as an interlude with its harpsichord arrangement.
Another noteworthy track is "Catalan," which features a mix of instruments including mellotron and clavinet, demonstrating the band's complex arrangements. The lyrical content, primarily penned by Dave Lawson, reflects various themes, from social commentary to introspective musings.
The album cover was painted by Patrick Woodroffe, taking over from the previous artist Roger Dean. The artwork complements the music, enhancing the album's thematic elements. The design concept was executed by Andrew McCulloch, who was also the band's drummer. This collaboration between the visual and musical aspects of the album contributes to the overall aesthetic experience.
Produced by Greenslade alongside Gregg Jackman and Jeremy Ensor, the album's engineering was handled by Gregg Jackman, with assistance from Lindsay Kidd. The production values reflect the band's commitment to high-quality sound and intricate arrangements. "Time And Tide" was released on vinyl LP format under Warner Bros. Records, presenting the work in a classic album format.
Greenslade's "Time And Tide" serves as an example of the band's evolution in the 1970s, marking a change in their musical direction and instrumentation. This album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London.
