Black Hole
"Black Hole" ("ブラックホール") is the third studio album by the Japanese progressive rock band Cosmos Factory, released in 1976. This album was a product of Toshiba-EMI Studios in Tokyo, recorded between March and April of that year. The album was released under the Express label and features a striking sci-fi cover designed by Vartan Kurjian.
The album presents a darker and heavier sound compared to its predecessors. It combines gothic elements with advanced electronic textures. The opening title track, "Blackhole," is a monumental nine-minute suite that sets the tone for the entire LP. The intricate layers created by Tsutomu Izumi's Mellotron strings and shrieking Moog synthesizer contribute to the album's cosmic atmosphere. Hisashi Mizutani's heavy guitar work draws parallels to the sounds of King Crimson and Uriah Heep. The bass grooves provided by Toshikazu Taki further enhance the rhythmic complexity of the tracks.
The album includes varied compositions, such as the two-part suite "The Vague Image (Introduction)" and "The Hard Image," along with "Crystal Solitaire." Another highlight is "A Wandering Young Man," which runs for nine minutes, showcasing the band's progressive rock prowess. The track "Days In The Past" adds more depth to the album, while the closing piece, "Mirror Freak," serves as an eight-minute heavy climax.
Produced by Kei Ishizaka and Naoki Tachikawa, "Black Hole" represents a collaborative effort that captures the essence of the band's musical vision. The album features contributions from all band members, with Izumi taking the lead on keyboards and vocals. The sound engineering by Kenichi Kosuge ensured that the complex sonic layers were effectively captured, allowing the listener to experience the full breadth of the band's musical exploration.
Cosmos Factory's "Black Hole" reflects the band's evolution in the realm of progressive rock during the mid-1970s. The album's release was notable for its combination of heavy rock elements with space rock influences, marking a distinct period in the band's career.
The album was released in Japan in November 1976, cataloged under Express ETP-72192.
