New Beginnings for Camel

"I Can See Your House From Here," released on October 29, 1979, marks the seventh studio album by the British progressive rock band Camel. This record comes after the departure of founding member Peter Bardens, leading to a renewed lineup that includes bassist and vocalist Colin Bass and keyboardist Kit Watkins. Watkins is known for his work with the band Happy the Man, while Jan Schelhaas, previously with Caravan, also contributes his talents on keyboards.

Production and Collaborations

The album was produced by Rupert Hine at Farmyard Studios in Buckinghamshire. It features contributions from well-known musicians, including guest percussion by Phil Collins of Genesis and Brand X fame, and saxophone by Mel Collins. Simon Jeffes, founder of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, arranged the orchestral strings for the album. These collaborations add layers of complexity and texture to Camel's signature sound.

Musical Exploration

The album showcases a variety of musical styles, ranging from accessible late-70s melodic art-pop to symphonic progressive rock. Tracks like "Wait" and "Your Love Is Stranger Than Mine" balance catchy melodies with intricate arrangements. In contrast, songs such as "Hymn To Her" and "Who We Are" delve deeper into the band's progressive roots. A highlight of the album is the instrumental track "Ice," which features an exceptional electric guitar solo by Andrew Latimer, lasting over ten minutes. This track stands out as one of Latimer's most emotional performances.

Recording Locations

Recording took place during the summer of 1979, with orchestral sessions held at AIR Studios in London. This setting provided an ideal environment for the album’s ambitious orchestral arrangements. The combination of Camel's established sound with new influences from the fresh lineup and guest artists creates a diverse listening experience.

Release and Format

"I Can See Your House From Here" was released in the UK on the Decca label, catalog number TXS-R 137, and was made available in vinyl format. The album reflects the band's evolution during a transitional period, with a blend of familiar and new elements throughout its tracks.
